Following principal and teacher discussions at the end of last week, over 90% of our students have been able to engage in remote learning through some means.  Students, parents, and caregivers have been using phones, tablets, and laptop and desktop computers.  Families and neighbors have been sharing network connections or using cellular data.  Completed assignments are being sent to teachers as picture messages via text, Remind, another Apple or Android application, or web-based interface.  Whether these have been great or satisfactory solutions, the majority of our students have been able to connect, and teachers and families have been able to work out viable options for our young people to engage in remote learning events and activities. 

To improve safety, our staff members will begin mailing paper assignments to those families who have no means of digital connectivity on Thursday, April 16, 2020.  Families with network capability who have requested paper assignments as a matter of convenience will now be required to participate digitally.  The number of students and families requiring paper assignments out of necessity can be supported through regular mail.  Please understand the time factor associated with our receiving paper assignments and ensuring safe handling slows teachers’ ability to provide quick feedback.  Please be patient with this process as everyone adjusts. 

To further support this process, beginning Wednesday, April 8, 2020, parents and caregivers should submit paper assignments using the Milton-Union Public Library drop box between the hours of 4:00-6:00pm.  Specifically, parents, caregivers, and students should use the drop box where patrons return audiovisual items.  The AV drop box is located outside the library entrance at 560 South Main Street.  You will also find a collection of envelopes and markers for labeling student work before submitting.  Write your student’s name, teacher, grade-level, and date on the envelope, secure with metal fasteners, and insert in the drop box.  Please use the envelope system, or school staff will have tremendous difficulty directing your student’s work to the appropriate teachers.  Between 4:00 and 6:00pm, this process will be continued as needed every Wednesday.
