Special Education Information:
Ohio school districts are required to provide free, appropriate educational services to all children in their attendance area, ages 3-21, who are determined to have a disability.  Disabilities under this requirement include hearing impairments, visual impairments, other health impairments, specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, multiple disabilities, intellectual disabilities, physical impairments, speech or language impairments, autism, and traumatic brain injuries.  Additionally, schools are required to provide evaluations to determine if a child has a disability.

Students with suspected disabilities are frequently referred by their school team or parent due to concerns with developmental progress or progress academically.  Following a referral, the school district must decide if a disability is suspected, and if so conduct an evaluation to determine eligibility.  Should a child be deemed a child with a disability, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) will be developed for the student.

Here at Milton-Union, we monitor the progress of every student through academic benchmarks, social-emotional tools, and team meetings for students requiring interventions.  Data from these sources guide the district’s decision to refer a student for an evaluation.  Additionally, we value the input of parents throughout the process and strive to create a partnership with the family in order to best facilitate growth for the students.  Our goal is to ensure that every student is given the opportunity to meet their greatest potential.
