Not only are the arts, student activities, and athletic events an opportunity to showcase the gifts, talents, and interests of young people, but they are also moments that bring people together and strengthen the bonds of community. Milton-Union Schools is committed to ensuring all athletes, students, families and community members can enjoy Friday Night Football in a safe and supportive environment.
Over the course of the fall season, athletic event managers and supervisors have observed and experienced an increasing number of safety and supervision concerns, particularly during Friday Night football games at Memorial Stadium. These management and supervisory challenges are mostly attributed to students attending games without a parent, family member, or other responsible adult present.
Like previous years, there are always minor concerns or problems at events that can be minimized or solved with staff member intervention and attention. However, there are a growing number of instances involving threatening behavior, property damage, and harassment by young people of all ages, those connected with the school district and some not, disinterested in supporting Milton-Union athletes, fellow students, siblings, and classmates. Also, in the natural course of “kids being kids,” injuries have occurred, both minor and major. These circumstances become issues when parents or caregivers are not present at the game and unreachable by phone.
To improve the situation and provide a safe and supportive environment for Milton-Union athletes, students, and spectators, the following guidelines will be in place for home games on October 10 and October 17 with Miami East and Covington, respectively.
No Reentry - Once a spectator leaves Memorial Stadium, there is no reentry.
Restricted Areas - Barriers will be in place to prohibit students and any spectators from entering the area behind concessions as well as the extreme northwest corner near the basketball courts.
Adult Supervision Required - Students in Kindergarten through Grade Eight, roughly 14 years old and younger, must be accompanied to the game by a parent, family member, or other responsible adult.
Remain in the Stands - All students must be seated in the stands. Students may leave the stands to visit concessions and restrooms.
Active Parent/Guardian Supervision - If parents, family members, or other responsible adults intend to watch the game from either end zone or another location, they must actively supervise children 14 and younger.
Behavior Expectations - Unruly or inappropriate behavior by spectators may result in immediate removal from Memorial Stadium with potential legal consequences and/or school discipline for Milton-Union students.
Thank you for your help in providing the safest possible environment for our young people to make memories, enjoy time spent with other students, and participate in the school activities they love most!
