On the afternoon of Thursday, September 24, 2026, while completing the regular afternoon route, the driver of bus nine was preparing for the first residential stop when approached by a visibly upset community member present to meet a student passenger. Before the driver reached the bus stop, the individual was off the curb in the road, demonstrating aggressive behavior by waving arms and yelling. The individual stood directly in front of the bus doors before they opened for deboarding. The individual was so close to the doors they could not physically open without further incident. Without fully understanding an individual’s intent, bus doors must always remain closed to prevent a parent or family member from boarding the bus. This practice would not only be a matter of driver safety but prevents unauthorized access to other students.
The driver then contacted the Transportation Department to advise. Per procedure, the driver was instructed to remain stopped with doors closed and await the arrival of law enforcement who had been contacted to aid with deescalation. Once law enforcement personnel were on site, students assigned to this bus stop were allowed to deboard, and the driver then continued the regular route. The route was delayed by eight to ten minutes. To be clear, law enforcement was contacted by the Transportation Department due to the individual’s aggressive behavior, and these actions were taken to ensure the safety of all passengers, both students and school district employees.
Just prior to reaching the bus stop, the driver had pulled over in a safe location because several student passengers were out of their seats. Ohio Administrative Code 3301-83-08 regarding Pupil Transportation Management Policies specifies that students must “remain seated” and “observe classroom conduct” while traveling on district provided transportation. These expectations exist to promote the safety of all passengers, so stopping the bus in a safe location and directing student passengers to return to their seats is a matter of their own safety.
The district is aware of a social media post with video documenting only part of the event. However, following established guidelines, rules, and protocols promote the safety and security of student and employee passengers – still the single most important priority of the district’s Transportation Department.
